Slope-capability distribution
Why a 70% slope rating is not the same as a 35-degree lawn
Percent grade and degrees use different scales. A 70% grade is approximately 35.0 degrees, while a 45% grade is about 24.2 degrees. Buyers regularly confuse the two, which can lead to choosing a mower that is not rated for the actual terrain.
Published maximum is a screening number, not a guarantee
Traction changes with wet grass, loose soil, exposed roots, transitions, wheel loading, direction of travel, and how close a difficult section sits to a boundary or drop-off. Manufacturer maximum-slope claims can also use different test conditions. A machine rated for the steepest measured section still needs margin for real-world conditions.
Drive system matters after the headline number
AWD and 4WD designs can improve traction and steering authority on difficult terrain, but drive labels alone do not establish safe slope performance. Use the published slope rating, installation manual, boundary guidance, and actual yard geometry together.
Methodology
This ranking uses the YardVerdicts Robot Mower Database. We include residential and prosumer rows with a numeric manufacturer-published maximum slope percentage. We do not infer a number where the source row is blank, and we do not rank a missing value as zero. Approximate degree conversions use arctangent(percent grade ÷ 100).
