The clearest pattern: capacity gets cheaper per acre
In this sample, very small robot mowers have the lowest purchase prices but the highest price relative to published lawn capacity. As rated acreage rises, median purchase price increases, but price per rated acre generally falls. That is normal equipment scaling: batteries, navigation, charging hardware, connectivity, and chassis costs do not shrink in proportion to lawn size.

Lowest observed price per rated acre
This is not a “best value” ranking. A cheap price-per-acre number can hide weaker navigation, lower slope capability, less mature support, fewer parts, or a machine that performs poorly in your specific yard. It is simply a normalized market metric.

Why we excluded commercial-only machines from the headline median
Commercial autonomous mowers can cost from several thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars and are designed around very different labor economics. Mixing a 20-acre golf-course mower into a homeowner price median would make the consumer market look artificially expensive. Commercial models remain in the full database and CSV.
Methodology
We included residential and prosumer models when an official manufacturer page displayed a U.S.-dollar price and a comparable published lawn-area rating. “Observed price” means the displayed price at capture time; it may be a promotional price rather than MSRP. We did not substitute marketplace prices, retailer prices, review-site estimates, or currency conversions when a directly comparable U.S.-dollar manufacturer price was unavailable.
Price per rated acre equals observed price divided by the manufacturer-published maximum or recommended lawn coverage in acres. It does not adjust for daily throughput, terrain, battery degradation, installation, accessories, tax, shipping, financing, warranty length, or expected service life.
Important limitation
This is a transparent market snapshot, not a sales-weighted consumer price index. Each model counts once regardless of how many units the manufacturer sells. Manufacturer coverage claims also use different test assumptions. The value of the index is comparability and auditability, not statistical representation of all robot mower transactions.
