What actually drives the answer
Modern mowers can use bump sensors, cameras, ultrasonic or ToF sensing, lift detection, and automatic blade stops. These layers reduce risk but are not a reason to intentionally allow children or pets to interact with an operating mower.
Where buyers get tripped up
Small toys, pet waste, hoses, low objects, and animals lying in grass can be harder to detect than large obstacles. Sensor performance also varies by lighting, angle, firmware, and object size.
How to make the decision
Follow the manufacturer safety guidance, keep people and animals away during operation, inspect the yard for small hazards, and schedule mowing when the lawn is least likely to be occupied.
