Edge performance is one of the biggest differences between a lawn that feels fully automated and one that still needs regular manual trimming. The mower body, blade-disc position, boundary geometry, and surrounding hardscape all matter.
What actually drives the answer
A cutting disc positioned closer to the outer chassis can reduce the uncut strip, but mower safety design and wheel clearance still create limits. Flat pavers or flush hardscape can let some mowers overrun the edge more effectively than walls or raised borders.
Where buyers get tripped up
Marketing phrases such as edge cut do not guarantee zero trimming. Fences, retaining walls, tree rings, raised curbs, and irregular beds can still leave grass the mower cannot physically reach.
How to make the decision
Inspect the deck geometry and look for the manufacturer’s minimum edge distance. If zero manual edging is a goal, design lawn borders with mower-friendly hardscape rather than relying on the robot alone.
