Work backward from beds, row length, plant spacing, germination assumptions and succession sowings. A bulk packet with a better unit price can be wasteful when the remainder ages past its useful germination window. Compare seeds per pack rather than pack price alone, and use the crop-specific sowing depth and spacing instructions.
Understand heirloom, organic and hybrid labels
Heirloom describes a cultivar tradition; organic describes an applicable growing or certification process; hybrid seed has a different breeding meaning. None of these labels alone guarantees performance in your zone. Check the specific cultivar's days to maturity, temperature tolerance, disease resistance and sunlight requirements.
Choose seed format for the job
Small packets make sense for trials and multiple varieties; bulk amounts can fit market gardens, cover crops or high-volume microgreen production. For microgreens and sprouts, make sure the exact seed listing is suitable for that intended growing method, and apply appropriate food-safety practices. Product availability and any organic documentation should be verified on the listing.
Price the complete planting plan
Include delivery fees, soil or growing medium, trays, irrigation, fertilizer where needed and expected reseeding. Note whether the supplier offers a particular germination or replacement policy for the purchased lot. We have not independently tested seed germination or confirmed live inventory.
