Do not compare a manual pergola with a motorized smart model

The most common bad comparison is brand-to-brand while ignoring product tier. A manual louvered pergola and a motorized roof with integrated controls solve different convenience problems and carry different electrical and service requirements.

Structural evidence must stay attached to the exact model

Hanso publishes unusually explicit wind and roof-load figures on current models. That is useful evidence, but it does not allow those figures to be generalized to another size or brand. PERGOLUX and Sunjoy should be checked against their own current manuals, anchoring instructions and local permitting requirements.

Drainage and water management belong in the comparison

A louvered roof is not just shade. Gutters, downspouts, post drainage and the direction water leaves the patio affect the finished project. Ask where water exits before choosing a post location or pouring a foundation.

Installed cost can reverse the hardware-price ranking

Include anchors, slab or footing work, electrical service for motorized roofs, permitting, delivery, lifting/assembly labor, screens, lighting and weather accessories. A lower kit price can become the higher project cost when the site needs more preparation.

Use exact dimensions before ordering accessories

Posts, roof modules, screens and side panels can be size-specific. Do not assume accessories transfer between generations or nominally similar sizes. Keep the exact model/size in every quote and permit document.

Our buying sequence

  1. Measure the usable patio and setback envelope.
  2. Choose manual vs motorized roof architecture.
  3. Shortlist exact sizes that physically fit.
  4. Obtain the current structural/anchoring documentation for those SKUs.
  5. Price site preparation, electrical work and installation.
  6. Compare final delivered/project cost—not list price alone.
